NEWS RELEASE For immediate release: 24 September 2008 New installation method improves insulation performance by 10% - AT NO COST Australia's cellulose insulation industry has introduced a new installation method that improves insulation performance in residential ceilings by 10% --- at no extra cost. Australian Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association (ACIMA) President, Laurie Moylan, said in Melbourne today that increasing government demands for improved building energy efficiency had meant ever-increasing insulation levels in ceilings. "Because of these increased insulation depths, ACIMA members are now able to address the long - standing problem of decreased insulation performance due to thermal bridging (i.e. heat loss or gain through ceiling joists). By installing loose fill insulation over the joists, insulation performance will be increased by around 10% - at no extra cost to the consumer. ACIMA represents those cellulose insulation companies who supply more than 80% of Australia's cellulose insulation to the annual $650 million national retail insulation market. "Thermal bridging has been the elephant in the room for the Australia insulation industry for many years, and it's only been recent government demands for increased building energy efficiency, that has forced the industry to face up to it now." "Only by covering ceiling joists with insulation will Australian insulation products actually achieve their claimed performance at higher insulation levels." "In the U.S and Europe, insulation has been routinely installed over the ceiling joists for nearly one hundred years to meet the need for extreme climate-related high insulation performance", Mr Moylan said.
