NEWS RELEASE for immediate release: 20 December 2007 Cellulose world's most environmentally friendly insulation More Australian homeowners are choosing cellulose insulation not only because it improves their homes' comfort levels & saves on power bills, but also because it's rated the world's most environmentally friendly insulation. Australian Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association (ACIMA) President, Laurie Moylan, said today that a 2004 Danish environmental research project* found that cellulose insulation has `the lowest global and regional environmental impacts'. ACIMA represents those cellulose insulation companies who supply more than 80% of Australia's cellulose insulation to the annual, national $650 million retail insulation market. "Since the Danish research results were publicised nationally earlier this year, an increasing number of builders and homeowners are choosing cellulose, based on increasing community support for protecting Australia's environment. "Other mainstream Australian insulation products such as glass wool & rock wool, are manufactured using materials which already have high embodied energy ratings, and have very high energy-use manufacturing processes using blast furnaces". Mr. Moylan said cellulose's world's most environmentally friendly rating was due to it being manufactured from 83% recycled cellulosic fibre (waste paper) materials, using a comparatively low energy process. "The cellulose insulation industry world-wide annually recycles millions of tonnes of fibrous waste paper products, with an annual contribution of tens of thousands of tonnes in Australia. Waste disposal is a major logistical & environmental problem for large cities in Australia & around the globe. Cellulose insulation manufacturers are helping overcome that problem throughout Australia. "Waste paper that's not recycled ends up in landfills around Australia, where it may contribute to environmental pollution". Mr. Moylan said both Australian homeowners and builders choosing cellulose insulation have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are contributing to Australia's campaign to achieve a cleaner, healthier environment now & for future Australian generations. "ACIMA members are proud to contribute to Australia's greenhouse gas reduction targets by manufacturing the world's most environmentally friendly insulation". * A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Building Insulation Products; 2004: dk-Teknik Energy & Environment ____________________________________________________________ For further information please contact: Laurie Moylan Kevin Herbert President Secretary ACIMA ACIMA Mob: 0418 359 454 Mob: 0418 679 131
